The United Nations has urged the global community to restart development aid for Afghanistan as it faces a worsening humanitarian and economic crisis.

Speaking at the UN Security Council, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths regretted that poverty is deepening and population is still growing in Afghanistan and the interim government has no budget to resolve economic problems.

He warned that more than half of Afghanistan's population needs humanitarian help and six million people are at risk of famine.

Griffiths said over one million children are estimated to be suffering from life-threatening form of malnutrition.
