Leading international daily the Washington Post says a victory of Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party in Indian elections, would put the country's secular democracy at stake as the party pursues and promotes Hindu nationalist agenda.                                                                                                    

In an article, the paper writes that secular voices within India are concerned that if returned to power, BJP might turn the country into an autocracy where Muslims and minorities are treated as second-class citizens.   

The paper points out that BJP's vote base lies in Hindutva inspired moves like construction of temple on the site of a razed mosque, revocation of Muslim dominated Kashmir’s autonomous special status and discriminatory citizenship laws against Muslims and other minorities.
