President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed commitment to promote the rights, well-being and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in all spheres of society.
In their separate messages on the 'International Day of Persons with Disabilities' being observed today (Tuesday), they called on all segments of society, including institutions, businesses, and civil society, to play their role in breaking down barriers and fostering environments where persons with disabilities can contribute as leaders. They emphasized the importance of treating these individuals with dignity and providing them with the resources they need to thrive.
President Asif Ali said Pakistan has made significant strides in empowering and uplifting Persons with Disabilities through various legal and institutional frameworks.
He said the promulgation of the ICT Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2020 stands as a landmark achievement, guaranteeing improved accessibility, vocational training, job opportunities, and an inclusive environment for them in all walks of life.
He called on all segments of society to ensure that the Persons with Disabilities fully participate in all sectors, including employment, sports, education and other socio-economic activities.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government is taking meaningful steps to ensure that persons with disabilities are provided with equal opportunities in education, employment, healthcare, and public life.
He said Pakistan joins the international community in commemorating this day, as the day marks the collective resolve to promoting the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities in every aspect of society.
He emphasized the need for conscious efforts to challenge behaviours and attitudes that perpetuate stigma and discrimination, replacing them with understanding and respect.
He said initiatives such as enhancing access to assistive technologies, improving inclusive infrastructure, and ensuring the implementation of disability-friendly laws are central to this vision.
Shehbaz Sharif also emphasized the need for acknowledging the invaluable contributions of caregivers, advocates, and organizations working tirelessly to support persons with disabilities.
