Kashmiris on both sides of Line of Control and the world over observed Right to Self-Determination Day today, with the pledge to continue their struggle till achievement of their internationally-acknowledged inalienable right.

Call for observance of the day was given by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

It was on 5th January in 1949 when the UN Security Council passed a resolution supporting the Kashmiris’ right to decide their future by themselves under a UN-supervised plebiscite.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, protest demonstrations, rallies, seminars and other programs were held in all districts to mark the day.

In Muzaffarabad, a rally was taken out under the auspices of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference.

Thousands of people including women, elders, children and youth participated in the rally.

Prime Minister of AJK Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, Convener of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference Ghulam Muhammad Safi,  Leader of the Opposition Khawaja Farooq Ahmed led the rally.

The participants were holding banners and placards on which demands from the United Nations for the right to self-determination were inscribed.

Addressing the rally, the Prime Minister Azad Kashmir said the government, political leadership and people of Azad Kashmir will continue to fight for plebiscite along with the All-Party Hurriyat Conference.

The participants of the rally marched from Burhan Wani Shaheed Chowk to the United Nations Military Observer Office and presented a memorandum.

In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, events, including rallies, seminars and conferences, were held, urging the UN to honor its commitment and address the ongoing suffering of Kashmiris under Indian occupation.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference in a statement in Srinagar called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to ensure the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

It condemned the genocide and repression by Indian forces in IIOJK, warning that India's actions violate international law and risk global conflict.

Protests were also held in Kupwara and Jammu residents in Kupwara highlighted the authorities' neglect of essential services, demanding the restoration of basic amenities.

Meanwhile, a demonstration in Jammu demanded the restoration of statehood and exclusive land and job rights for the Kashmiri people.

At an event in the United States, prominent scholars, including Dr Imtiaz Khan, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, and Dr Ghulam N Mir, reiterated that a UN-supervised plebiscite remains the only just solution to the Kashmir dispute.

They called for urgent international intervention to end the oppression of Kashmiris and ensure peace in the territory.
