Romina Khurshid calls for empowering women in disaster management
August 06, 2024

Coordinator of Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam has stressed the need for empowering women and girls in disaster management.

Addressing the "One-Day National Dialogue on the Role of Women and Girls in Disasters" in Islamabad today, she said women are not just victims of disasters, but they are agents of change and resilience.

Romina Khurshid Alam said their unique perspectives and capacities must be integrated into our disaster management strategies to build a stronger, more inclusive Pakistan.

In his remarks, Chairman NDMA Lt General Inam Haider Malik emphasized the importance of proactive responsiveness and social resilience in disaster management.  He stressed the need for adaptive measures to address climate-related challenges.

The Chairman NDMA acknowledged that disasters disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, particularly women and girls. However, their potential for resilience-building remains largely untapped within formal disaster risk reduction and anticipatory action frameworks.

He also underscored the critical contributions of women and girls, addressing the barriers they encounter, and advocating for gender-sensitive policies and practices in Pakistan's disaster risk reduction efforts.
