International Literacy Day being observed today
September 08, 2023

International Literacy Day is being observed today with an aim to accelerate progress in education and reflect on the role of literacy in building more inclusive, peaceful and sustainable societies.

This year theme of the Day is: ‘promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’.

Governor Balochistan Malik Abdul Wali Kakar has said that everyone has to play role for promoting education in the province.

He said this while addressing a ceremony in connection with International Literacy Day in Quetta on Friday.

The Governor said we have to enroll every child in schools to move the country towards progress and prosperity.

In his message on the occasion, Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice retired Maqbool Baqir has underlined the need of promoting literacy as no society can progress  socially and economically without increasing literacy rate.

He said literacy also plays an important role in controlling poverty.

Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqir said floods and corona badly damaged the process of education in the country in the last couple of years.

He underlined need of moving towards digital learning as the world has already moved towards that direction.

A report released by Kashmir Media Service on International Literacy Day said Kashmiri children are being harassed and humiliated by Indian troops instead of getting education.

The report added that it has been for months that the Kashmiri children are forced to remain in homes as IIOJK was virtually cut off from the outside world, with phone and internet links shutdown and occupation troops enforcing a strict curfew.

The report urged the international community to pay attention to the plight of students in IIOJK by resolving the Kashmir dispute in line with relevant UN Security resolutions.
