In the US State of California, at least 17 people have died in a barrage of severe winter storms.

In a statement, California Governor Gavin Newsom said the winter storms have claimed more lives than wildfires in the past two years combined.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has approved Newsom's request for a federal emergency declaration, activating the full weight of the federal government to support the state's storm response and recovery efforts.
