The World Health Organization has warned against using two Indian cough syrups for children after they were found causing over 18 deaths in Uzbekistan.

In a statement, the global health body said the India manufactured products were substandard and do not provide guarantees for safety.

Indian pharmaceutical industry has been under increased scrutiny after cough syrups made by Indian companies caused children's deaths in other countries.

In October last, the WHO issued a similar alert after 66 children died in Gambia using India manufactured syrups.
