Renowned media consultant Omer Farooq has emphasized the importance of radio as a crucial medium for education, information dissemination, and entertainment.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Pakistan’s correspondent, Qasim Bukhari, on the occasion of World Radio Day, he highlighted radio’s accessibility and trustworthiness, particularly in remote or underserved areas, making it one of the most effective ways to reach people.
This year’s World Radio Day theme, he said, is "Radio and Climate Change."
The media consultant acknowledged Radio Pakistan’s key role in raising awareness about climate change and sustainability. He pointed out that Pakistan has been severely impacted by climate change, citing the devastating 2022 floods as a prime example.
During the floods, Radio Pakistan played a vital role in providing critical assistance and spreading awareness about disease prevention and precautions to the affected populations. He also commended the station’s efforts during the smog season, where it helped raise awareness about the environmental issue.
Omer Farooq also praised Radio Pakistan’s Video Podcast Initiative, which he believes will significantly boost both radio listenership and viewership, aligning with the growing demand for multimedia content.
While discussing the future of radio, he stressed that the medium remains largely untapped and holds considerable potential for expansion.
In response to claims about the decline of the radio industry, he rejected this notion, pointing out the continued success of numerous FM and community radio stations. He also noted that the radio industry continues to thrive in digital and social media through the essential role of voiceovers, which are provided by many talented artists.
Concluding his remarks, Omer Farooq described Radio Pakistan as a vital institution that upholds the country’s ideological boundaries and serves as a significant source of information for the public.
