The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced to appoint Markus Potzel of Germany as his new Deputy Special Representative (Political) for Afghanistan and In-Charge in the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

A career diplomat, Potzel also served as Germany's Ambassador to Afghanistan from the year 2014 to 2016.

The announcement by the UN Secretary General came after Deborah Lyons recently ended her tenure as the UN's Chief Representative in Afghanistan.
