Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik has said the government is taking concrete measures to curb pollution by upgrading oil refineries, promoting electric vehicles and strengthening public transport.
Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad today, he said a new policy has been approved under which refineries will be upgraded to produce petroleum products meeting Euro-five quality standards.
He said improving fuel quality will significantly reduce transport-related pollution and improve air quality.
The Minister said the government will soon introduce a new automotive policy focused on electric vehicles, adding that Pakistan will witness a major shift towards EVs and battery-based transport.
He said the government is also promoting environmental-friendly public transport, including electric buses, while initiatives such as pink motorcycles and scooters for women will improve mobility and economic opportunities.
Musadik Malik said refineries would now have to either upgrade their facilities or face closure. He said the government will no longer tolerate delays in this regard.
He also highlighted measures to control industrial and agricultural pollution, including action against polluting brick kilns, marble factories and crop burning.
The Minister said the government is encouraging the use of biogas and other sustainable materials as part of its broader efforts to reduce the country's environmental burden and ensure long-term climate sustainability.
