Pakistan has informed a UN panel that demographic planning has been a priority for the country's successive governments, with focus on raising awareness, providing healthcare, building capacity and implementing population control strategies.
This was informed by the the Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Aamir Khan while speaking in a debate on 'Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development', at the UN Commission for Population and Development.
He said Pakistan is the world's fifth most populous country with approximately 220 million people and this population bomb has implications for government’s efforts to improve the standard of living and ensuring food security, nutrition and sustainable development for all.
