Incarcerated All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Masarrat Aalam Butt, has said, Indian military is using rape as a weapon of war to humiliate the Kashmiri people and break their resolve for freedom from India’s illegal occupation.
In a message from New Delhi’s infamous Tihar jail on the completion of 32 years of Kunanposhpora mass rape tragedy he said Indian troops are involved in heinous war crimes under the protection of draconian law, Armed Forces Special Powers.
The APHC Chairman urged the international human rights organisations to take practical steps to provide justice to the victims of the mass rape tragedy.
Indian troops had gang-raped around 100 women of all ages from eight to eighty years old on the night of February 23 in 1991 during a siege and search operation in Kunanposhpora in Kupwara district.
Since 2014, February 23 is every year observed as the Kashmiri Women's Resistance Day, call for which was, first, given by Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society and supported by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
A report released by the Research Section of Kashmir Media Service in connection with the Day, today, said the miseries and victimization of Kashmiri women by the Indian troops and police personnel continue unabated in IIOJK.
The report maintained that at least 682 women have been martyred by Indian troops since January 2001 till date.
