NDMA issues advisory for cyclonic storm ‘ASNA’

Cyclonic Storm 'ASNA' Over Northeast Arabian Sea can cause widespread rain, wind-thunderstorms and urban flooding in areas along the coast line of Sindh and Balochistan.

National Emergencies Operation Center has anticipated that a deep depression over Rann of Kutch, India is approaching west-southwest of Pakistan and now lies at about 170 kilometers east and southeast of Karachi. The system is likely to keep moving further west and southwestwards in northeast Arabian Sea along Sindh coast and intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm on Friday evening.

Very heavy and isolated extremely heavy falls are expected in Karachi division, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad  Khan, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Dadu and Shaheed Benazirabad districts till tomorrow.

Widespread rain and wind-thunderstorms with scattered heavy and very heavy falls are also likely in Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech and Gwadar districts from today to Sunday with occasional gaps.

Under the said Cyclonic Storm, sea conditions are likely to remain rough and very rough with squally winds 50-60 kilometers per hour and gusting 70 kilometers per hour.

Windstorms may damage crops and loose structures, while thunderstorms can increase risk of lightning strikes.

Fishermen of Sindh are advised not to venture into sea till tomorrow and those from Balochistan till Sunday. General public is advised to avoid visiting the seaside and beach areas and remain cautious of loose structures like billboards, electrical poles, solar panels and hoardings.

The public is also advised to stay informed by keeping track of weather updates and alerts.

NDMA has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store, to provide timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines to the public.

It has also issued instructions to all relevant departments to take necessary precautions to mitigate the possible effects of flooding and extreme weather.
