Analysts term transparency in Senate polls vital to strengthen democracy
March 03, 2021

Dr. A. Z Hilali (Expert on International Relations): It is a good sign that Pakistan is heading towards path of democracy.  All political parties and stakeholders concerned are on board to strengthen the legislative procedure. It is appreciable that all political parties are committed to ensure supremacy of Parliament and rule of law. The holding of the Senate election is a victory of democracy and it would help stabilize the country’s political system. Strengthening of Parliament is imperative for political progress in the country. The incumbent government is taking corrective measures to strengthen the political system in the country. The results of the senate elections should be acceptable to all the stakeholders concerned. The ultimate goal is the development of the country, rule of law and supremacy of parliament. The Senate is the supreme institution, which performs multi-dimensional responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the Senate to maintain the political stability and look after the domestic political matters. All the political parties should work sincerely to uplift democracy. Transparency and continuity of the Parliament is the key for success of democratic political system.

Sarfaraz Raja (Senior Journalist): There was a tough competition in Islamabad constituency. Mr. Yousaf Raza Gillani won the election from Islamabad seat. It is a test for the Election Commission of Pakistan to inquire about the rejected votes. Senate elections were held in free, fair and transparent manner. It is also expected that Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani will be the nominee for chairmanship. It is highly appreciable that all the political parties have shown maturity over the senate elections. It is need of the hour for the political parties to get united and take appropriate measures for transparency of the elections. Prime Minister Imran Khan always propagated transparency in the system throughout his 22-year long struggle.

Kanwar Dilshad (Former Secretary, ECP): The holding of the senate election is the victory of democracy.  Every political party has the right to express its narrative. There is no horse trading and everyone cast votes without any prejudice. Prime Minister Imran Khan is taking bold steps to strengthen democracy. The Election Commission of Pakistan will officially announce the results after completion of electoral process.  Difference of opinion is the beauty of democracy.  The Senate gives equal representation to all the federating units in order to promote national cohesion and harmony by counterbalancing the numerical disparity among provinces in the National Assembly.  Senate symbolizes a process of continuity in the national affairs.
