Analysts hail firm commitment of Prime Minister to not start trade with India at the cost of Kashmir
April 04, 2021

Dr. Huma Baqai (IR Expert): Prime Minister Imran Khan is a democratically elected head of government. Direct communication of head of government with the masses is an encouraging development. Pakistan is always keen to resolve all outstanding issues with India through dialogue, including the core Kashmir dispute. As far as commerce is concerned, Pakistan is willing to improve trade ties with all neighboring countries, including India, but not at the cost of Kashmir issue. Pakistan is now focusing more on becoming a geo-economic state rather than geo-political state. Former RAW Chief had also advised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have dialogue with Pakistan on Kashmir issue. The government has taken a right approach of abandoning the idea of trade with India until New Delhi reviews its Kashmir policy and rescinds its action to revoke IIOJK's special status. This approach depicts Pakistan’s correct diplomatic messaging on Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

Dr. Amna Mehmood (IR Expert): Priority of any country is normalization of relations with other countries in diverse fields including trade, commerce, economy and others. India-Pakistan case is entirely different as New Delhi never proved to be a reliable trading partner. In past, several attempts were made by Pakistan to have a comprehensive and composite dialogue with India with Kashmir issue in the agenda but it is New Delhi that always stepped back.  Indian and Pakistani prime ministers exchanged letters last week, with Imran Khan saying his country desires peaceful, cooperative relations with all neighbors, including India. For his part, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written that New Delhi desires cordial relations with the people of Pakistan. In the month of February, Pakistan and India’s militaries agreed to strictly observe ceasefire at the de facto border between the two countries in Kashmir, helping to reduce almost daily firing incidents by both sides.

Brig. (Retd.) Said Nazir (Defense Analyst): India has always adopted the policy of confrontation with Pakistan and China. Indian atrocities in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, using rape as weapon of war in the area, controversial citizenship bill, and aggressive policies towards the neighboring countries have been badly exposed in front of the world. Pakistan is continuing its moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmir cause and will never compromise on its stance at the cost of trade with India. Kashmiris and Pakistani nation have hailed the measures taken by PTI government in this regard. As per UN charter, there can be humanitarian intervention when human rights violations are involved. Pakistan should have a firm and consistent foreign policy as far as relations with India are concerned, as New Delhi will leave no stone unturned to defame Pakistan.

Dr. Sabur Ghayur (Economist): Prime Minister Imran Khan is determined to control inflation and he will himself monitor the situation of fluctuation in prices of items of daily use. The value of rupee is steadily improving against major currencies. Controlling inflation will definitely increase productivity that will lead to rise in exports. The main challenge for the government is to provide relief to common people keeping in view the current COVID-19 situation. The government has announced a massive package for the construction industry as over 40 industries are allied with it. This move has resulted in boost of economic activities even in COVID-19 scenario. Another positive step taken by the government is the provision of cash assistance to the deserving families who are facing financial constraints. The economic indicators show that the prudent policies of the government are bearing fruit. If the government continues the same momentum in economic policies, Pakistan will overcome the challenges and will emerge as a developed country.
