Analysts hail Pakistan as a responsible nuclear state
September 05, 2022

Ali Sarwar Naqvi (Former Ambassador): Pakistan has a clear position and takes it as a great pride that it is a responsible nuclear state. I endorse the statement of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar that Pakistan’s nuclear program remains fully cognizant of its obligations to nonproliferation and disarmament. Over the years, Pakistan has been commendably successful in the application of nuclear energy and technology for the benefit and development of society. On the other hand, a number of incidents of nuclear material theft and lost have been reported in India in recent years that pose serious threats of nuclear terrorism and regional instability.

Mushtaq Ahmed Mehar (Former Ambassador): The international opinion can never reconcile on having weapons of mass destruction. The nuclear program of Pakistan is in safe hands and is only for its defense. Pakistan has always demonstrated a responsible behaviour as a nuclear power state by vigilantly controlling and maintaining the safety and security of its strategic assets. Pakistan is proactively engaged with the international community to promote nuclear safety and security. Nuclear power plants in Pakistan are under IAEA safeguards. All the efforts of expanding the nuclear energy programme are in pursuit of a clean and effective option to meet Pakistan’s energy needs. Pakistan is in a position of not only using nuclear energy for its national programmes for development and progress, but can also provide assistance to other countries in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
