IIOJK: Authorities intensify restrictions on democratic freedoms
August 06, 2026

In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the authorities continue to intensify restrictions on democratic freedoms to suppress the legitimate struggle of the Kashmiri people.

According to Kashmir Media Service, India has been imposing travel bans, passport revocations, arbitrary detentions, and intimidation to silence political leaders, journalists, and human rights defenders since the revocation of the territory's special status on August 5, 2019.

Meanwhile, India's Home Ministry has informed Parliament that prisons in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir remain severely overcrowded, with over 5,300 inmates lodged against an official capacity of 3,600.

On the other hand, the New Delhi-based Forum for Human Rights in Jammu and Kashmir has demanded restoration of the territory's full statehood and repeal of India's action of August 5, 2019.

In its latest report, the Forum warned that political instability and the human rights situation continue to worsen under the Indian occupation.
