Dr. Noor Fatima (Economist): The recent visit of Azeri President is very important and vital for Pakistan’ economy. Azerbaijan and other Central Asian states are rich in natural resources and could support Pakistan in diverse fields particularly in the energy sector. It is a timely decision of the government to engage with Azerbaijan in the energy sector. Pakistan at this point of time is in dire need of energy for economic stabilization. Moreover, the investment from Azerbaijan in different fields will also improve the foreign reserves in the country. Pakistan increasingly seeks to position itself as a transit hub connecting landlocked Central Asian states to the Arabian Sea.
Dr. Zahid Anwar Khan (IR Expert): Azerbaijan is among the states that got independence from USSR and after its independence Azerbaijan focused on strengthening its relations with other countries. Azerbaijan is an oil-rich country. Pakistan and Azerbaijan have enjoyed cordial relations with each other for a long period of time and these relations have strengthened over the years. Moreover, strong relations with Azerbaijan and Central Asian states are an important component of Pakistan’s foreign policy. The visit of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev clearly shows that Azerbaijan values its relations with Pakistan. Azerbaijan always supported the narrative of Pakistan on the Kashmir issue whereas Pakistan has always supported Azerbaijan's stand on Nagorno-Karabakh.
Dr. Muhammad Khan (Defense/IR Analyst): The Central Asian States are strengthening their relations with Pakistan. Azerbaijan and Pakistan have expressed their desire to promote defense cooperation. Azerbaijan is interested to invest in the defense sector in Pakistan and can take advantage of Pakistan’s expertise in the defense area. Being a Muslim country, Azerbaijan is enjoying strong relations with Pakistan. Meanwhile, Pakistan and Azerbaijan developed mutual consensus on certain regional and international issues. Azerbaijan has once again supported Pakistan's stance on the Kashmir conflict. The current level of cooperation provides a win-win proposition for both the countries. Pakistan is also an important diplomatic supporter and more recently, a key military partner for Azerbaijan.
