Analysts hail Pakistan’s pivotal role in highlighting impending humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan
December 14, 2021

Arif Kamal (Former Ambassador): Pakistan is the right place to provide a base for assistance to the neighboring Afghanistan. An important meeting of OIC foreign ministers is going to be held in Islamabad and Pakistan is trying its level best to re-activate the international community. Through this forum, Pakistan would appeal the Muslim Ummah to work together for people of Afghanistan. The peace and stability in Afghanistan is the common interest of all the regional stakeholders. At this point of time, Afghanistan is facing a serious humanitarian situation, with millions of Afghans facing an uncertain future due to shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies. It is the moral responsibility of the international community to come forward and support the Afghan government and its people in order to avert economic collapse. It is right time for OIC to step in and make collective efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the Afghan people, provide immediate and sustained support to them and continue to remain engaged with them for the well-being and prosperity of Afghanistan.

Abdullah Gul (Defense Analyst): Pakistan is making all out efforts to bring stability in Afghanistan and without its intervention, the peace and stability in the war torn country is not possible. The United States left Afghanistan in a hurry leaving the country in a state of disarray and chaos. Now it is the time that the world develops a consensus on assisting Afghan people and improving infrastructure of the war-torn country. It is the prime responsibility of the United Nations to take action in the prevailing situation in Afghanistan. Now the only hope is OIC being an important regional organization. All the member countries must come to a conclusion to eliminate the sufferings of the Afghan people. Pakistan has urged the world time and again to get engage with Taliban government; otherwise the region may again become a hub of terrorism. The regional situation will continue to worsen if the OIC forum does not come to a conclusion on the Afghan situation.

Dr. A. Z. Hilali (IR Expert): It is a good step that we are using modern technology in the 21st century in different fields of life. The government is determined to conduct the next general elections through EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) that would help in holding a fair election and bringing an end to the rigging. The people of the country want fair elections as every election in the past generated controversies and rigging charges which also impacted the credibility of the respective governments. It is the moral responsibility of all the political parties, especially the opposition, to join hands with the government to end the uproar of rigging in Pakistan.

Dr. Huma Baqai (IR Expert): There is no other option but to adopt modern technology in this century. The EVM was introduced in India gradually and Indian dynamics are similar to Pakistan. Although, some countries have rejected this mechanism but there is great acceptance of this modern technology across the globe. EVM would help to alleviate the confusion caused by the post-election rigging charges and bring about a strong government to support democracy. The government must facilitate the Election Commission to use EVM in the local government elections as a test run. If there are flaws in the machine, it could be eliminated through mutual consensus. It is the need of the hour that all the stakeholders support the initiative of the government for the induction of new technology in the electoral process.
