As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s started his US visit, digital trucks carrying messages on big screens roaming on the streets in New York have called on President Joe Biden to quiz Modi on Human rights violations in India.
One of the message asked the US President to ask Modi why India is under a genocide watch today!”
Another message with an images of political activist Umar Khalid, asking why he has been incarcerated for over 1,000 days without trial.
On screen said the wrestlers’ protest that has shaken India for the last few months also found a mention on one of the trucks.
Meanwhile, Washington Post has carried a full-page ad, criticizing the handling of press freedom in India.
The ad by the Committee to Protect Journalists and its partners reads India claims to be the world’s largest democracy, but it is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the media.
Earlier, in a joint letter more than 70 Democratic members of the US Congress urged President Biden to raise “areas of concern” in his meeting with the Indian leader.
Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the signatories of the letter, said that Modi’s government has cracked down on the press and civil society, jailed political opponents, and pushed an aggressive Hindu nationalism that leaves little space for India’s religious minorities.
He urged President Biden to raise these facts in his meeting with Modi.
