Economist appreciates vision of PM Shahbaz for exploring alternative renewable energy sources
December 27, 2022

Mirza Ikhtiyar Baig (Economist): The best source of energy production is solar energy which is much cheaper. The solar panels can be installed in minimum time. Unfortunately, Pakistan spent a huge amount on import of furnace oil and LNG as a source for energy production. Due to which the import bill increased to almost 20 billion dollars and the developing country like Pakistan cannot afford such a huge import bill. Pakistan has tremendous potential to generate solar and wind power. Solar and wind power should be urgently expanded to at least 30 percent of Pakistan’s total electricity generation capacity by 2030, equivalent to around 24,000 Megawatts. Expanding renewable energy can make electricity cheaper, achieve greater energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and help Pakistan save up to $5 billion over the next 20 years. Incumbent government under the leadership of Prime Minister Shahabaz Sharif is very active to explore alternative and renewable energy sources especially the solar energy. The phase wise switching to these alternate sources will help in saving a huge amount of foreign reserves and will help industry in reducing cost of production.
