Analysts hail vision of Prime Minister to build more dams to ensure food security in Pakistan
February 14, 2022

Dr. Noor Fatima (Economist): The rates of electricity are in high flux that has an impinging impact on the cost of production. The underlying reason for the price hike of electricity is the dearth of sustainable renewable energy sources. Hydroelectric power is considered as one of the cheapest and plausible sources of renewable energy.  After 1970's, the leadership has been doing mere lip service to cope with the energy crisis and construction of mega dams. Today's statement of Prime Minister Imran Khan implies that Pakistan has taken a giant leap towards establishing indigenous resources of renewable energy. The construction of mega dams will not only cut short the energy crises but will also enhance the water storage capacity of the country. This development will have a burgeoning impact on the economic growth of the country as the import of furnace oil will decrease and that will eventually reduce Pakistan's trade deficit.

Dr. Mirza Ikhtiyar Baig (Economist): The agricultural sector of Pakistan has been ignored for decades which resulted in shortage of food supply. Pakistan is importing those basic crops that can be efficiently cultivated in the country and even can add to the exports.  Thus, the construction of mega dams will improvise the irrigation system as well as the agricultural sector at large. Moreover, Pakistan is importing LNG and furnace oil to meet the energy sector needs. The construction of ten mega dams will provide a cheap, clean and sustainable indigenous energy source.  The masses associated with the energy sector will get maximum benefit and this development will also contribute in generating employment opportunities.

Dr. Huma Baqai (IR Expert): The incumbent government of Pakistan has repeatedly highlighted the looming humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Previously, the west was of the view that the delay in the provision of Afghanistan's assets is due to lack of banking channels. The banking channel issue has now been resolved but the US has announced that half of the amount will be provided to the victims of 9/11.  Such sheer absurdity from Washington implies that the western community wants to alienate Afghanistan. The international community needs to understand that the Taliban's regime is quite unstable. The financial crisis will be a mighty blow to the feeble pillars of the Taliban government. The US should be cognizant of the fact that any sort of socio-economic turmoil in Kabul will not only impact Pakistan but will spill over across the globe.  Moreover, the pertinent threat of terrorist outlets is being mismanaged that will jeopardize the region with rise of terror attacks. The Muslim Ummah has long been divided which is evident from the stance of Muslim countries over Palestine issue. There is a dire need to take the Afghan crisis seriously; otherwise the entire international community will face the repercussions.

Abdullah Gul (IR Expert): The international media, certainly the US media, is keen to know about Pakistan's stance on the Afghan issue which shows the importance of Pakistan at international level. Prime Minister Imran Khan has categorically conveyed Pakistan's narrative that Islamabad does not want any humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. The US government has not yet recovered from the humiliation after the unceremonious exit from Afghanistan and it is quite visible from their absurd policies towards the Ukraine issue. Pakistan has unequivocally communicated to the international community that any humanitarian crisis if deepened in Afghanistan will not be ending soon. There is a dire need to have a dialogue on the ongoing crisis in Kabul as Pakistan has already suffered a lot due to war on terror.
