Analysts calls for public awareness on climate challenges
February 14, 2025

Waheed Ahmad (Former Ambassador): The federal and provincial government of Punjab is taking serious steps to meet the challenges posed by the climate change. Federal government has also applied for the carbon credit rating from the international community. It is a positive development that people are well aware of the hazards of climate change. We can win the carbon credit from the United Nations with strenuous efforts. Presently we are far behind from meeting the criterion for this credit. Our entrepreneurs are required to get aware about the looming challenges posed by climate change so that they may make preparations to meet these challenges posed to their industrial units in future.

Dr Ijaz Ahmad (Environmentalist):  Around three billion new trees and plants have been planted under Green Pakistan program. The government has fixed plantation of ten billion new plants under Green Pakistan Program. We are taking care of newly planted plants to ensure their growth. Moreover, the government is also focusing on increasing the forest cover in the country. The relevant departments are also taking steps to check the de-forestation. We need to promote the green energy hydle and solar for our domestic and industrial sectors. There should be an appropriate mechanism for climate financing which does not exist at global level till now. We will be facing problems from climate change issue until this mechanism is developed. Till then we can send our carbon credits to international market. Sindh government has done good job on Mangroves and began getting carbon credit from the world. Moreover we may promote the use of electrical vehicles to reduce carbon emissions. Pakistan also faces data deficiency as we never bother to collect data so we are unable to devise an effective strategy. We lack in this area in almost every sector to have a good and effective planning. We need to work on this issue on war footing. We are also working on reducing de-forestation rate and increase our forest cover in the country.
