The 2025 Human Rights Watch report has unveiled a troubling picture of escalating violence, extrajudicial killing, systemic discrimination, and suppression in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and across India under Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party government.
The report reveals that despite the Indian government’s claims of restoring peace and security, Kashmiris expressed their discontent with continued restrictions on basic freedoms.
The report mentioned that journalists in Kashmir face an increasingly hostile environment, with threats ranging from fabricated criminal cases and restrictions on movement to physical assaults.
Human rights defenders have also been subjected to severe persecution, including arbitrary detentions and police interrogations. These actions have raised serious concerns about government accountability and media freedom in the territory.
Meanwhile, an Indian Army soldier was killed during a violent cordon and search operation in Sopore town today. The operation, which was launched by Indian troops on Sunday, continued into its second day.
On the other hand, a Indian army man committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at Ragni Post in Kupwara district.
