Dr. Talat Anwar (Economist): It is disappointing to note that international community is spending tremendous amount of money on war on terror, conflict in Ukraine and other global issues, but is not helping the developing countries like Pakistan that are already overburdened due to various challenges. Pakistan paid a high cost in war against terror, rendering huge sacrifices in terms of humans and materials. At the COP27 meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh, many countries pledged to provide aid to flood-hit Pakistan but it is yet to be materialized. We also need an IMF program to manage our economy. If Pakistan does not receive international aid, the people of the country will suffer badly.
A. M. Shahid (Former Ambassador): The global financial pact summit is part of an earlier meeting held in Sharm el Sheikh. The Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif fully participated in the conference and presented Pakistan’s point of view. The PM clearly said the under developed countries need help to tackle challenges relating to their economies and climate change. Pakistan suffered massively in floods and is using its limited resources to rehabilitate the flood hit people. The pledges made at donors’ conferences for Pakistan are yet to be materialized. Prime Minister on the sidelines of the summit met various world leaders and apprised them of the economic situation of Pakistan. Pakistan has a huge market and is an economically attractive country. It is need of the hour to help Pakistan stand up on its feet.
