Experts call for a comprehensive strategy to uplift the health sector at par with int’l standards
December 05, 2023

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed (Former Chairman, HEC): Although medical education system in Pakistan is much better yet we need to learn more from developed countries. The developed countries are doing much better and adapting new techniques. We are importing medical equipment and other surgical products but if we put good efforts the same can be manufactured in our own country and it could be available at very low prices. In European countries, no medicine is provided without prescription whereas here in Pakistan we can get medicines without any prescription means accessibility and availability is relatively better in our country.

Dr. Javed Akram (Caretaker Health Minister Punjab): Pakistan is a developing country and striving to make improvements in the health sector. The sustainability and consistency in health policies is vital. All the stakeholders need to be on board for health financing. This sector must be above the diplomatic differences. The hospitals are in dire need of modern technology medical equipment to deal with the number of patients. It is good news that the Prime Minister has expressed determination to focus on improvement in the health sector. It is unfortunate no attention is given on the expansion of the hospitals. The children hospital in Lahore is 1450 bedded hospital yet over 4000 children are admitted in it. At this point of time, Pakistan is spending 0.78% of its GDP in the health sector that needs to be maximized.
