Economists say China Pakistan Economic Corridor is pivotal to Pakistan’s development and prosperity
October 18, 2023

Humayun Iqbal Shami (Economist): The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) meeting hosted by China stands as a pivotal international forum, drawing the active participation of numerous heads of state and government officials. This event provided a remarkable opportunity for the Pakistani Prime Minister to engage with leaders from China and various other nations. Such interactions are expected to lay the groundwork for enhancing trade, commerce, and interpersonal relationships among member countries. The projects launched under the BRI have played a significant role in fostering positive economic growth within these nations. Importantly, the execution of these projects has not burdened the participating countries with debt, countering unfounded Western claims to the contrary. The BRI is an unprecedented endeavor in the history of humankind. If China's vision for this initiative is fully realized, it will substantially enhance global connectivity and prosperity.

Dr. Noor Fatima (IR Expert): The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) serves as the cornerstone project within China's Belt and Road Initiative. Upon the successful completion of this flagship endeavor, Pakistan's economy is poised for significant advancements in various sectors. Regrettably, progress on CPEC projects experienced a slowdown during the previous government's tenure. Nevertheless, subsequent efforts revitalized the pace of these projects. Pakistan is indeed fortunate to have secured substantial financing from its enduring ally, China, which has been instrumental in enhancing its infrastructure and addressing its energy requirements. This collaboration has fostered unity among Pakistan's various institutions, all working in concert to ensure the success of CPEC. This shared determination has instilled confidence, prompting the country to extend invitations to additional foreign investors, further bolstering its economic prospects.
