A M Shahid (Former Ambassador): The presence of PM Shehbaz Sharif in New York to attend the UN General Assembly session is very important as he gets an opportunity to present Pakistan’ perspective before world community. He would be highlighting the issue of Jammu and Kashmir and Palestinian cause as Pakistan has been supporting this cause for the last seven decades. We have always stood with the Palestinian brothers and sisters and similarly we are standing with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from these issues, it is a golden chance to interact with world leaders and exchange the view on vital issues that modern world is confronted with. Likewise, the climate change issue is also very important and the world leaders have already made promises for financial assistance for Pakistan in this regard. The economic issue is a very crucial for Pakistan as we have been getting loans from IMF. We need to reform the World Trade Organization and also the world banking system so the loan burdens from the poor countries could be reduced. Until the loan burden is not reduced, it is not possible for Pakistan or any other country to develop to its full potential.
Abdullah Gul (Defense Analyst): The 79th session of UNGA is being held at a time when the peace and security is a burning issue at global level. The whole of the world is looking a peaceful end to crisis that is taking place right now in Gaza and Kashmir. The situation in Gaza is completely out of control. The international authorities are saying that it will take several years to collect the rubble from Gaza. Then there is humanitarian crisis, people are being targeted and they are being killed. Now Israel is using different and quite different modes of attacks like walkie talkie, mobile phones and solar system attacks that were never seen before. The technology is being utilized for terrorism purpose which is against the humanitarian standards. I am sure that Pakistan will be heard properly at UNGA because Pakistan is the only nuclear country of the Islamic world and Pakistan is very responsible. It is the responsibility of UNO and intl’ community to play their role in resolving this issue. We must also encourage those countries like South Africa, Colombia, Ireland and others who opposed the Israeli atrocities against the humanity and who took them to the International Court of Justice. Israel and India, and those who are helping out Israelis and Indians in their anti-humanitarian drive, need to be addressed properly. It these atrocities are not going to end with positive dialogue, then these conflicts will go out of hands and then nobody will be able to control it because other jihadi groups will join the conflict which will then have no boundaries. So it is high time to address these issues and world should remember its responsibility before it is too late.
