Shazia Abid (Member of Punjab Assembly): The situation of flood in District Rajanpur is worse as more water is being added to the existing stranded waters. Pakistan People’s Party is doing its best to provide relief to the flood-hit people. The Suleman Range belt has been totally cut off due to flood waters, therefore relief and rescue could not reach there. The provincial government of Punjab is not focusing on relief activities as the functionaries are busy in doing politics amid the human catastrophe.
Syed Salman Shah (Director General PDMA Sindh): The widespread floods have caused devastation in vast areas of Sindh which is hampering the relief efforts. PDMA has provided shelter to 90,000 people but it is just a ten percent of the entire displaced people in the province. The scale of devastation could be gauged due to the fact that the Sindh government had to declare 23 districts of Sindh as calamity-hit. So far the exact scale of damage has not been estimated due to the ongoing rains. According to the initial estimates 3.4 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh out of which 200,000 people are in relief camps. Almost 1.5 million people have been displaced in the province. Salman Shah said that the government buildings are in dilapidated condition, therefore the IDPs cannot be shifted in those buildings. Although we do not have dearth of funds but arrangement of relief goods and other equipment is difficult. Army and Navy helicopters are also on disposal of PDMA but still there is no need for the helicopters as boats are being used to transport people.
Akhtar Ali Jamali (Deputy Director Rescue PDMA Balochistan): Almost all the districts in the province have been affected by the floods. PDMA rescue teams are working in Naseerabad district, Sohbatpur and Naseerabad; whereas another team has been dispatched to Jhal Magsi where people are trapped in the floodwaters. More than 1800 people have been rescued in these four districts as well as relief goods have also been dispatched to the flood-hit areas. Hundred percent people have not been rescued as the situation is worsening day by day due to the ongoing rains. PDMA has allocated 10 million to every Commissioner and five million to every Deputy Commissioner for procurement of relief goods for the flood-hot areas.
Khalid Masood (Director Coordination Provincial Disaster Management Authority Punjab): The current spell of rains has done more damage as expected and we are trying our best to provide relief to as many people as we can. Currently, we suffered a lot while evacuating the most affected areas and taking the families to safe places. These areas consist of more than 250,000 people. We have provided more than 30 thousand tents, where more than 66 thousand people are living. We have given more than 40 thousand food packages to these families. The relief activities are going on in rain and flood-affected areas in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur. Many areas of Koh-e-Suleman are facing the most devastating situation and we are trying our best to overcome this on an immediate basis.
Rasool Baksh Chandio (Advisor to CM Sindh): Almost all of the areas in Sindh have been drowned from these heavy rain fall spells and a devastating situation is being observed. The rescue and emergency situation have been initiated in the region. On the directives of CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah the MPAs of these areas along with the rescue teams are working to provide relief to as many people as they can. Our top priority is to rescue the people and later shift them to safe places accordingly and provide them with shelter and food. Dadu, Sukkur, Jaccobabad, Umarkot, Mirpur Khas and almost all of the areas in Sindh are badly affected by the flood situation. The party workers along with the rescue teams are working day and night to overcome the situation.
Salman Ghani (Senior Analyst): The current situation is far more destructive than it was being expected and the locals along with the rescue workers are trying to overcome this prevailing situation. Even in history, the Pakistani people have always helped its people in such devastating situations and we have a great name in charity. More than 900 people have died and now we need food, shelter and other basic commodities for the affectees and provided with tents to protect their families. Whenever there is any such situation the people of Pakistan have always helped their countrymen in any means possible.
