Economists see bright chances of revival of IMF program
June 28, 2023

Humayun Iqbal Shami (Economist): Chances of Pakistan getting next tranche of IMF are bright. Pakistan has fulfilled the strict conditions of the Fund while taking unpopular decisions. Pakistan is facing economic problems that have been exacerbated by climate change. The revival of IMF program will give a breathing space to Pakistan and the country will be able to get loans from multilateral financial institutions and trust of the international community will increase on it. Pakistan has to repay its debts and the rating of its sovereign bonds will also improve. This resumption of programme will also reduce the burden on Pakistan’s currency and will help improve foreign exchange reserves.

Dr. Noor Fatima (Political Economist): Hopefully, IMF program will revive thanks to the hectic efforts of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The resumption of IMF program will open gates of funding from multiple sources to Pakistan. The world sees IMF program as a guarantee of financial stability of a country. It increases confidence of foreign investors on a country’s economic policies. The value of currency also appreciates as Pakistan saw depreciation of rupee over the last few months due to economic uncertainty. The economic reforms are very important for a country’s economic survival.
