World is acknowledging role of Pakistan in mitigating severe impacts of climate change: Experts
June 06, 2021

Malik Amin Aslam (Adviser to Prime Minister on Climate Change): It is a very proud day for Pakistan as we have been receiving appreciation from world leaders on launching of various environment related projects. The world is acknowledging the role of Pakistan in mitigating the severe impacts of climate change. It means Pakistan is being projected positively around the world. The present government has initiated a number of projects including Clean and Green Pakistan, Ten billion Tsunami tree and others which are nature based solutions to cope with the challenge of climate change. World Environment Day has been hosted by Pakistan for the first time. The performance of the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan has resulted in positive image of Pakistan in the world.

Hammad Naqi Khan (Director General, WWF): Prime Minister is basically a nature-loving person and this is also reflected in his policies. The incumbent government has taken a number of initiatives aimed at maximizing forestation. This segment was completely neglected during the previous governments. However, greenery is not the only solution to overcome adverse impacts of climate change. Issues of water scarcity, rising pollution levels and effective waste management must also be taken care of by the government. Prime Minister has rightly urged the developed countries with higher levels of carbon emissions to play their part in combating the challenge of climate change. As far as Pakistan is concerned, it is responsibility of every individual to play its role in reducing pollution.

Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Asif Yasin Malik (Defense Analyst): Present Afghan government is under the strong influence of Indian government. The National Security Advisor of Afghanistan on part of his government is in a state of frustration and is known for his anti-Pakistan tirades. I am not surprised at the blaming statement of Afghan NSA against Pakistan. President Ashraf Ghani's government has to change its attitude. Otherwise, situation in the war-torn country will become worse after the withdrawal of NATO troops. If the withdrawal of NATO forces is smooth, then we can expect a positive outcome of the on-going intra-Afghan dialogue.

Dr. Khurram Iqbal (IR Expert): Many international scholars are predicting that after the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, the country may descend into another civil war. The main reason is that stakeholders were unable to establish true democracy in the land-locked country. The withdrawal of NATO forces is part of the US grand strategic designs meant to leave the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan in a state of chaos and anarchy. It clearly indicates that irresponsible withdrawal of the international troops is aimed at countering the rise of China. The United States during its presence in Afghanistan totally side lined the local leadership and imposed western supported leadership in the country.
